Choosing Your Kit

You may be thinking, “what battery and electric bike kit combination will best meet my needs?” On this site alone there are a number of combinations to choose from, and this page is meant to help you make an informed decision.
 
Need for Speed
All the electric bike kits we offer will work well with either a 48 volt or 36 volt battery. It is plug-and-play for either voltage level. Our batteries use Lithium NCM cells that are good for many years of use.  So if you want brute speed, the fastest most durable combination is the 48 volt 12AH Lithium battery with the heavy duty direct drive hub motor. This will get you into the 27-29 mph range.  As always, you can peddle faster if you can move your legs that fast. This setup will provide 20+ miles per charge under continuous normal to moderately heavy use.  Combined weight of complete motor kit (includes rim, spokes, et al) and battery is about 27 lbs. A very slight resistance is noticed when only peddling without any throttle being applied. Heavier riders (225 plus) may find that this solution best meets their needs.
 
Cost Conscious
Without giving up any quality, our 36 volt Lithium battery(s) with the heavy duty direct drive hub motor kit is the most price sensitive solution. This will get you into the 20 mph range with no effort.  As always, you can peddle faster if desired. This setup will provide 16-20+ miles per charge under continuous normal to moderately heavy use.   Combined weight of complete motor kit and battery is about 26 lbs. A very slight resistance is noticed when only peddling without any throttle being applied. This is the setup I rode for over a year and about 2K miles. I’m 50, 6’ 3”, 200 lbs. and I effortlessly maintained 20 plus mph on flat ground and routinely went 20 plus miles per charge.
 
Optimum Efficiency
The 36 volt Lithium battery with the lightweight geared hub motor kit is the optimum solution for most riders. It completely free-wheels and has no resistance at all when under complete peddle power. The total electric bike kit with battery weighs only 19 lbs and we have customers reporting 30 to 40 miles of distance per charge, but 20+ miles is a good conservative figure. It is very important, however, to make sure the lighter geared kit you purchase comes with a controller that delivers about 20 amps of current and that the motor is built to accommodate it.  Often these setups come with a small 12-14 amp controller, which provides limited power range. With a 36 volt battery, a 14 amp controller will only deliver approximately 500 watts of peak power (14 x 36). The 20-22 amp controllers we use with all kits provide nearly 800 watts of peak power at 36 volts and over 1000 watts at 48 volts (22 x 48); that’s nearly 50% to 100% more get up and go when you need it. Make sure the controller does allow this much amperage in its existing state; some controllers are rated for more, but don’t operate that way without circuitry modifications. So why not use over higher amps for even more power? More amps means more heat, etc., the geared hub motors are not made to hold up over time to the stress of high amperage and voltage levels. Also, good 10 AH lithium batteries are rated to operate at 20 amps continuous and 30 amps peak. Not so good ones are rated much lower. Additional amp hours will allow for higher amperage draw, but every amp hour adds to the cost and weight of the battery.

Best of All Worlds
Our new
high-end geared motor kit combines the best of the smaller geared motor with that of the direct drive motor.  It is made to be very efficient with no resistance, run at 48 volts, climb very steep mountains, and provide speeds of 22-24 mph on flat ground.  Yes, it is the highest priced model, but still significantly less than any comparable system out there.  You can expect around 25 miles per charge with our 48V 12AH lithium battery depending on terrain and starts/stops.  This setup combined with a Cycle Analyst

Double the Distance
Consider multiple batteries for long distance riding. We have customers that put a battery in each saddle bag on the rear of their bike. With two 36 volt batteries and the geared motor setup, 50 to 60 miles on primarily flat ground is doable. This would be the ultimate Go Car Lite experience!
 
Whatever you decide on, it is worth the time to do some homework and learn a little bit about how things work. A good quality setup will give you years of enjoyment with only very minor upkeep. There are plenty of reputable electric bike kit providers and plenty more that don’t really know much about what they are selling. Whether you buy from us or not, we want people to take advantage of the great benefits an electric bicycle can provide; it quite literally can be life changing!
